A bit about me

Born in Glasgow, moved to Derbyshire, graduated in Nottingham and now into my 14th year living in Ashbourne in The Peak District.
A Manufacturing Engineering Graduate with 16 years experience in industry, a love of stained glass and well-designed objects with form, beauty and function, a believer in supporting local enterprise and British manufacturing describes where I am today, doing something I enjoy, making stained glass art.

The pieces should speak for themselves, giving an indication of the design styles and quality workmanship that I am passionate about. In short, I find the colours used and the intricacies of traditional Edwardian, Victorian and Art Nouveau designs very inspiring. Geometrical and Optical design are also big influences in my work which can be seen in the gallery.

An exhibition in Athens showing the works of Victor Vaserly opened my eyes to the world of Optical Art, which led to discovering the brilliant work of Bridget Riley. It fascinates me that by the selection of colour and shape, the eye sees and the body feels movement when none exists. When I started making stained glass pieces, I had a strong desire to find out if this movement could be achieved even though the colours would have to be separated by lead, thus reducing the necessary contrast between the colours.

There is an amazing selection of glass available which in itself is a source of inspiration for designs. This is one of the reasons I like geometrical patterns as you can really show off the glass textures and colours. The appeal of stained glass is that it changes as lighting conditions alter; this gives life to the pieces with ever changing and striking reflections.

I design pieces for installation into windows, doors or hanging onto walls as an alternative to pictures or photographs. Time has been spent developing a method to hang the pieces an inch off the wall which is non-obtrusive to allow light to reach behind the piece, this also allows a colourful reflection to be cast onto the wall behind. Opaque glass is used for the Op Art pieces to give greater depth of colour for contrast. These can be hung directly on a wall as it is not so critical for back-lighting, but can of course be hung off the wall if preferred. Check out the wall hanging section for pictures of the options available.

Commissions are welcome and can be small or large, with as much or as little input from myself to achieve a piece of stained glass art to last many years. There may be something on this site that appeals and a similar design could be made to reflect your requirements. Please use the contact form to get in touch.
